Decarbonising the asphalt repair industry

Tarstone is always striving to improve work methods and introduce new, more sustainable, greener maintenance and repair solutions to reduce our impact on the environment and add to the circular economy.

The Thermal Repair unit generates heat, via a mix of LPG and integrated energy-efficient solar panels, to thermally heat areas of the carriageway showing signs of deterioration. The existing failing or failed material is then mixed with a small quantity of virgin material to create a homogeneous material which is raked and then compacted with a roller, leaving a superior surface finish with no joints and a safer road.

This patented, thermal technology is the perfect solution for problem areas and defects such as potholes, joint failures, texture loss, patch repairs (6 to 20 m2) and difficult locations.

There is no need for milling, saw cutting or jack hammering. Also, there is no requirement for additional vehicles to dispose of the waste or bring material in. Everything is contained in the one vehicle. Since the area around the repair area is thermal heated, there are also no joints.
There’s also lower noise due to less machinery, less men, and the faster, more efficient process, making this system ideal for use in residential or night time working.



Area is heated via mix of LPG, electrical energy, and solar power. At least 90% of failing or failed material is recycled in situ with only an additional 10% added, meaning less equipment (lower noise pollution) and 85% lower carbon emissions (0.4 Tn vs 2.4 Tn using conventional methods), plus zero waste to landfill.
